With data centers on par with the aviation industry for their contribution to the world’s CO2 emissions, alternative refrigerants in data center cooling systems have the potential to reduce emissions equivalent to 43.5–50.5 gigatons of carbon dioxide from 2020 to 2050.
There are principally two types of data center cooling solutions: computer room air conditioners (CRACs) and computer room air handlers (CRAHs). Which technology is the best choice for each installation depends on various factors, including climate and data center size and configuration.
MegaSuite 6 data center in the heart of New York City

Construction was completed on DataGryd’s MegaSuite 6 facility. Corgan, a data center architecture firm, designed the building; Robert Derector Associates served as the project’s engineer; and Clune Construction built it.
With the rise of colocation, enterprise and edge data centers, the requirements for data center racks have changed from being a cabinet that manages equipment to a rack enclosure that can reduce data center operational costs by preserving valuable floor space, optimizing cooling and increasing the efficiency of IT staff.
Is putting end-users first a business philosophy
or a design philosophy, or both? Saying that end-users come first is easy, but
system designers and equipment suppliers find that putting end-users first can
be hard to do.
IT technology has increased in density over the
past decade to the point where individual racks can now require more than
30,000 watts of energy. In 2007, an article by John Niemann, product line
manager at APC-MGE, reported that new server technologies were driving power
densities in excess of 30 kilowatts per cabinet.
A 2006 AFCOM membership survey revealed that one
out of every four data centers will experience a business disruption serious
enough to affect the company’s ability to continue business-as-usual.
