Internap Network ServicesCorporation announced that Vix Technology is using Internap’s scalable managed hosting, colocation and route-optimized Performance IP services to power MASS, one of Vix’s Electronic Fare Collection (EFC) platforms. With infrastructure services from Internap, Vix is able to seamlessly process more than 50 million transactions annually to deliver an exceptional experience for public transit commuters in the U.S.

A global transportation solutions innovator with its worldwide headquarters in Australia and U.S. headquarters in Seattle,Vix transforms the way people connect and commute, with projects including the Hong Kong Octopus Card, Singapore EzLink, Beijing ACC and the Melbourne Metcard. Vix EFC solutions allow commuters to pay fares using their NFC-enabled mobile devices, transit, banking, or prepaid contactless cards. Vix’s EFC systems also provide sophisticated public transportation features on demand, such as checking card balances, adding funds and planning and tracking journeys. Horizon, Vix’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) solution, provides real-time performance tools for transit operator schedule adherence and fleet tracking.

Vix partnered with Internap to support its deployment of Seattle’s transit card system, which allows passengers to use a single card for a variety of transportation options, including bus, train, ferry and light rail. Vix transitioned from independently hosting its MASS EFC platform to a data center services partnership with Internap that meets its complete hosting, colocation and network acceleration needs. Vix is now also leveraging Internap’s services to support Vix’s ITS solution for vehicle management in Martha’s Vineyard and the soon-to-launch update to its open card EFC system that has been running in Salt Lake City since 2009.

“Our Vix EFC and ITS platforms are mission-critical for our customers. They provide the foundation for a great commuter experience, allowing riders to get where they’re going on time. As a result, our systems must be able to effortlessly and rapidly process large volumes of passenger transactions,” said Doug Thomas, general manager, Americas, at Vix Technology. “With Internap, we’ve formed a true partnership that provides the full package of scalability, speed, and efficiency required to consistently deliver that experience. We expect this will drive innovation in more efficient and scalable delivery models for our customers, such as a turnkey, mobile transit SaaS solution that can be deployed on demand, reducing the cost and complexity of building out a separate solution for each transit project.”

Vix is using Internap’s managed hosting solution to deliver the scale to support passenger and transaction growth. Internap’s Performance IP connectivity service combines the strength of multiple carrier backbones with patented Managed Internet Route Optimizer technology – which analyzes network characteristics like jitter, latency and packet loss – to deliver traffic over the optimal route, ensuring commuter and transit operators are able to instantly process payments and access information in real time. Vix is also leveraging Internap’s colocation services to support several legacy applications, as well as a fully-redundant Internap disaster recovery site to ensure maximum uptime for its mission-critical mobile transit systems.

“Organizations like Vix that sit at the intersection of big data, mobility and SaaS, demand high-performance, massively scalable infrastructure services,” said Josh Crowe, senior vice president of product development at Internap. “Our broad data center services portfolio that supports a wide range of applications, combined with unparalleled network optimization, is a perfect match, enabling customers to elevate their business by increasing efficiencies and end-user satisfaction.”
