Nextgov is reporting that the Office of Management and Budget has underestimated the number of federal data centers. An official count of centers with data processing operations of more than 500 sq ft was taken in September and totaled 1,100. The count is closer to 2,094, according to Vivek Kundra, federal CIO, and Richard Spiers, CIO of the Homeland Security Department.

The count was taken as part of an overall government mandate to eliminate data center redundancy in the federal government, Nextgov reports.
